About Me...
Where to start...English born and bred (except for a spell during childhood when we lived abroad), I'm currently serving with the British Army and recently returned from my first op deployment to Afghanistan. I love my country, I love being a Soldier and I'm extremely loyal to my family and friends and would do anything to defend them. Some say I'm headstrong, overly opinionated and that sometimes I don't think before I speak. I would probably agree with that assessment. A tomboy and a girly girl in equal portions, I sometimes feel things more than I should and admit to being a romantic pessimist when it comes to matters of the heart. Oh and I drink far too much tea than I should.

What I like...
History, anything military, reading, physical fitness, fishing, alternative/rock music, pubs, sci fi, hanging out with my friends and skiving on the internet when I get the chance.

Favourite Music

In no particular order...The Killers, Three Days Grace, Foo Fighters, Ill Scarlett, Metallica, Keane, Rise Against, Franz Ferdinand, Evanescence, Smashing Pumpkins, Snow Patrol, AFI, Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, James Blunt, My Chemical Romance, Nine Inch Nails, Panic at the Disco, Radiohead, Muse, Pink Floyd, She Wants Revenge and many more including some classical and favourite hymns.

Films & Television
Anything that doesn't have a sappy, romantic plot gets my attention. I mostly enjoy action, black comedy, sci fi, foreign titles and films that make you think. The History and Discovery Channels, cable news channels and Lost get a look in. I love Lost. Have to confess to a weakness for X Factor, American Idol, EastEnders and generally any show featuring Ross Kemp.

Books
Anything to do with history, travel, current topical affairs, military strategy, atlases, and even the odd trashy novel for light relief!

My Heroes
A Hero
: "a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability", "an illustrious warrior", "a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities", "one that shows great courage." I've encountered some heroes in my life. One is my Grandfather, the others are the Soldiers I serve with, four of whom made the ultimate sacrifice, and one I have yet to meet.

The Road Not Taken

by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

For The Fallen

by Laurence Binyon

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
- John Stuart Mill

    I've lost all faith that anyone could compare. They don't breed that kind of politician any more.

    I wasn't an adult during their reigns, but as a child during the Reagan years, I must say they weren't shabby ... and patriotism meant something to everyone.

    Tasha,
    I understand exactly what you are saying about leaving your comrades and a job unfinished. I tried and tried to go back to Vietnam, but the government (in all it's brilliant judgement) decided I was more important as an instructor in the Signal School. People who have never experienced it will always wonder why someone would willingly go back into harms way. I have such a deep sense of admiration and pride in who you are and what you are doing (especially in the present volunteer military).

    Thanks Steve for stopping by. Things are going well here. I think I'm now used to being back although sometimes I wish I were still back there which probably sounds weird but maybe you would understand since you're a Vet. Thanks for letting me know about Mark's new board. I'm going to stop by this week. Hope you're having a good week and take care. Tasha
